Research objectives: This article reviews the recent book by Yasuki Shinichiro, published in Japanese under the title of 貨幣が語るジョチ・ウルス in October 2023 by Seifudo Shoten. Research results and scientific novelty: Since there is no translation of the book at the moment, the English title, translated literally, would be “Story of the Golden Horde Told by Coins.” This review synthesizes the essence of Yasuki Shinichiro’s monograph, “The Story of the Golden Horde as Told by the Coins,” which represents a novel economic perspective on the Golden Horde. Amidst a resurgence of scholarly interest in the Mongol Empire and Golden Horde, Shinichiro’s work stands out for its focus on economic rather than historical or military aspects. Each of the ten chapters is methodically summarized, emphasizing his unique approach as an economist in examining the Golden Horde’s economic structure and influence. The review situates the book within the broader context of international literature on the Mongol Empire, highlighting its distinctiveness and the need for broader accessibility beyond the Japanese-speaking academic community. The comprehensive summary of each chapter underscores the author’s innovative approach to understanding the Golden Horde’s economic dynamics, offering a fresh perspective in the field of Mongol studies.
The purpose of this article is to analyze the modern image of the Golden Horde in Russian-language media and journalism in the Russian-speaking post-Soviet space, to identify key discursive frames and their influence on the construction of identities and cultural processes. In Russia today, many actors are challenge this narrative, highlighting cultural hybridity and the Horde’s administrative sophistication. In Central Asian republics like Kazakhstan, the Golden Horde is increasingly reclaimed as a source of pride and state legitimacy. Research materials: The research materials are articles, books and films about the Golden Horde, which were produced in the post-Soviet space (primarily in Russia and Kazakhstan). The article traces representations of the Horde in contemporary media, literature, and the performing arts, revealing a spectrum from exoticized enemy to civilizational partner. Results and scientific novelty: Through discourse analysis, the study highlights how the memory of the Golden Horde functions as a contested space for negotiating historical trauma, cultural legacy, and aspirations for pluralistic identity. Ultimately, the paper demonstrates that the Golden Horde remains a powerful cultural metaphor - serving simultaneously as a mirror of modern anxieties and a resource for alternative historical imaginaries. The novelty of the study is that in this article we show for the first time how the image of the Horde is reflected in modern culture not only as a space of competition, but also as a space of interaction and positive rethinking. The relevance of this study lies in the enduring role of historical memory and representations of the past in shaping contemporary cultural processes, as well as in the need for a nuanced understanding of identity formation within the multiethnic and multireligious landscape of post-Soviet Eurasia.
Objective: To study the features of the display, application, and meaning of variations of the term “Tatar” found in medieval Arabic writings of the 13th-15th centuries. Research materials: The main sources of this study are the works of Arabic-language authors of the 13th to 15th centuries: Ibn al-Athir, Ibn Abi Hadid, Ibn Abd az-Zahir, an-Nuwayri, Rukn ad-Din Baybars, Ibn Khaldun, al-Maqrizi, etc. Results and novelty of the study: The term “Tatar” was widely used in many medieval sources, as well as in medieval Arabic literature. However, no comprehensive study of the visualization of this term in medieval Arabic sources of the 13th-15th centuries has been conducted. Analysis of the works of Arab scholars of the 13th-15th centuries revealed that, when presenting the history of the Chingizids, the authors who wrote about them at the beginning of the 13th century, not being direct witnesses, let alone eyewitnesses of those events, almost entirely based their concepts on the material of the History of Ibn al-Athir. In the works of Ibn Abi Hadid and Abu Shama al-Maqdisi, the term “Tatar” was used consistently. Later authors, continuing the traditions of their predecessors, relied on their material and borrowed this term, subsequently using it in presenting the entire history of the Chingizids. Along with this, they (An-Nuwayri, Al-Omari, Ibn Khaldun) tried to determine the origin of the medieval Tatars. Beginning from the middle of the 13th century, Arab authors, focusing on the historical realities of their time, used the marker “Mongol” along with “Tatar” in their writings, mainly in relation to the Hulaguids and Jochids. However, the term “Tatar” was used quite widely until the 15th century.
